Job DescriptionAn Executive Chef for K-12 oversees and supports comprehensive food service operations for an Alaska school district, including day-to-day kitchen management and coordination of delivery logistics across a road system. This role is responsible for driving operational excellence through high-quality food, innovative menu development, and a strong focus on student participation and client satisfaction.The Executive Chef leads menu planning and implementation in compliance with NSLP standards, while ensuring accurate food costing, procurement, inventory management, and product availability. This position plays a key role in training, coaching, and developing team members across all facets of food service, including food safety, sanitation, and operational best practices.Additionally, the Executive Chef, hand in hand with the General Manager, fosters strong client relationships, supports retention efforts, and ensures consistent execution of company programs aligned with organizational mission and values. Responsibilities also include maintaining sanitation and cleaning standards, ensuring proper labeling and food safety compliance, supporting special functions, and stepping into management roles as needed to maintain seamless operations.Responsibilities+ Maintain expert knowledge of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP); ensure compliance and train staff in requirements.+ Develop menus and standardized recipes; oversee food quality, presentation, and portion control.+ Plan, manage, and support daily food service operations across assigned units.+ Develop and test participation improvement measures.+ Monitor site usage to forecast demand, place orders, and maintain proper inventory levels.+ Manage inventory, product availability, receiving, and freight organization; source local items as needed.+ Control waste through effective forecasting, ordering, and production practices.+ Monitor employee production records to ensure accuracy and compliance.+ Implement and support company systems and programs, including food safety, training, labor, and procurement initiatives.+ Train, coach, supervise, and hold staff accountable for performance, safety, and required reporting.+ Ensure sanitation, food safety standards, and proper chemical usage are consistently maintained.+ Oversee the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) in compliance with guidelines.+ Assist with high-volume food production and daily kitchen operations as needed.+ Collaborate with leadership and clients on operations, contracts, and service expectations.+ Perform other related duties as assigned, which could include supporting other accounts throughout the territory as needed.Qualifications+ High School Diploma or GED equivalent.+ A minimum of three (3) years of food service management experience required in K-12, higher education, hospitality, or related experience.+ Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an executive chef in K-12, higher education, hospitality, or related experience.+ Must possess a ServSafe Manager Certification.+ Menu planning experience and a strong understanding of current culinary trends.+ Strong understanding of forecasting, food cost management, purchasing, inventory and labor management concepts.+ Ability to problem-solve and manage projects creatively and effectively.+ A valid driver's License and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance. This includes no DUI convictions in the past five (5) years.+ High level of acuity with the use of technology; Must be highly proficient in using the NSLP Software and Microsoft Office Suite applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)+ Must be fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English.Preferred Requirements+ Ability to effectively communicate to multiple audiences and develop strong relationships with customers.+ Ability to multitask and proven effectiveness in a high standard driven environment.+ Certified Executive Chef (CEC) or equivalent culinary degree.+ Demonstrated experience leading and engaging a culinary team and exceptional human resource and supervisory/management skillset.Skills and Abilities+ Ability to work independently and complete assignments in a timely manner.+ Proven success at managing multiple tasks, projects, and subordinates.+ Proficiency in planning and organization in fast paced kitchen settings.+ Demonstrated positive leadership values by treating all employees with dignity and respect.+ Demonstrated strong ability to lead, build diverse teams and oversee training.+ Personal maturity and poise; the ability to remain composed under pressure, to make sound decisions, and to manage diversity.+ Personal drive and energy - a liking of challenges and opportunities to innovate.+ Working knowledge of general accounting principles.+ Strong communication skills, in both written and verbal forms.Working Conditions and Physical RequirementsWeather: Indoors; employee is primarily in a controlled, temperate, environment.Noise level: Work environment is usually moderate to loud.Description of environment: Commercial and/or professional kitchen environment which will vary, based on the location, between education and hospitality facilities.Physical requirements: Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
