Parks and Recreation, Park Maintenance is looking for a Part-Time Limited Park Ranger to join our exciting team ofoutdoor enthusiasts.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
A successful park ranger has curiosity, good observational skills, enjoys physical activity outdoors and likes to interact in a professional, calm and patient manner with a variety of park users. Having an interest in the natural and cultural history of Southeast Alaska and caring about the stewardship of public land is also desirable. Must possess the ability to hike over rough and steep terrain, on and off trail, and be able to lift at least 50lbs. A park ranger must also be able to work with a variety of coworkers as well as independently.
The summer season is busy with high demand from residents, seasonal workers, tourists and commercial operators for the use of parking, recreation areas and trails. The rangers work cooperatively with Parks and Landscape Maintenance, Juneau Police Department, Juneau Community Service Officers, Docks and Harbors and other CBJ staff on different projects. We also work with Trail Mix crews, Youth Employment in Parks (YEP) crews and volunteers working on trail and park projects.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
Work schedule may include weekends, evenings and holidays. The Parks Maintenance facility is located at 802 Front Street in downtown Douglas.
Typical Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Lead Park Ranger, the Park Ranger position will patrol municipally managed recreation areas and trails by foot, mountain bike, all-terrain vehicles, light trucks, and small boats to enforce ordinances and regulations by issuing verbal or written warnings; this position may issue written citations when authorized.
This position will also perform general maintenance. The ranger may operate a variety of power machinery and tools including a 40 HP skiff, a mini excavator, a skid steer loader, a power tracked carrier, a combination rock drill/breaker, a chainsaw and brusher. Performs minor field repairs to power tools and equipment as required. Picks up trash, paints, cleans facilities, and performs minor repairs of park fixtures and equipment.
The ranger prepares clear, accurate and concise written reports as required. Assists with trail assessment and conditions survey. Observes, reports and mitigates hazards in park areas. Participates in training, safety and information meetings. Communicates with the public in a courteous and helpful manner. Provides information about rules and interpretation on the cultural and natural history of park areas to visitors. Performs most assigned duties outdoors, regardless of weather.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High School graduation or the equivalent.
Other:

Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment; AND
A valid driver's license at time of appointment.

Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.

Note: This position receives designated citation authority as a municipal enforcement agent from the City Manager.
Desired Qualifications

Other: Prior experience in law enforcement, natural resources management, or related fields.
