Overview

The recruitment is exempt from the hiring freeze (Administrative Order 358). This recruitment is open to Alaska Residents only. Applicants must meet Alaska Residency Requirements in order to be considered for employment at this time.

What you will be doing

Under the general supervision of an Alaska Wildlife Trooper, this position performs technical level work in the prevention and detection of violations and the enforcement of laws and regulations. It also performs semi-skilled work, frequently in remote field locations, to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational.

The working conditions you can expect

The duties of this position require the incumbent to work and live in remote field sites or on vessels underway for extended periods. The physical and mental stamina associated with this work environment is high and an essential attribute for the incumbent to possess.

What we are looking for

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Ability to set up camp independently in a wilderness situation
  • Experience using hazardous equipment, such as firearms, chain saws, etc.
  • Experience operating boats more than 24 feet in length
  • Ability to perform vessel and off-road vehicle maintenance
  • Ability to spend long periods of time in close quarters while at sea on vessels between 29-156 feet in length

Public Safety Technician minimum qualifications

Public Safety Technician 1 Minimum Qualifications (Range 9)

Eighteen years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED at the time of employment. Must have a current, valid Alaska Driver's License at time of employment. Job duties require lifting and carrying of loads weighing up to 70 pounds over rough or uneven surfaces. A physical examination is required to determine the ability to meet the physical demands of the job. A background investigation, including a criminal record check for conviction of felony or misdemeanor crimes, will be made. Most positions are seasonal and may require work in remote sites where employees may quarter in bunkhouses, vessels, or tents. Employees must be available for recall to testify in court during the off season; if this occurs they will be compensated.

Public Safety Technician 2 Minimum Qualifications (Range 11)

Must be eighteen years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED at time of employment, and have six months of experience in one of the following: patrol and surveillance duties and identifying, recording violations, and documenting criminal activity; field experience involving fish or wildlife management or habitat protection; experience as a commercial fisher, licensed hunter or registered sport fishing guide, or related role; qualifying military outdoor experience; or experience performing semi-skilled duties around aircraft. A current Alaska Driver's license is required. Job duties require lifting up to 70 pounds and a physical examination may be required. A background investigation will be conducted. Positions may require work in remote sites where employees may quarter in bunkhouses, vessels, or tents.

Special note: Must possess a current, valid Alaska Driver's license at time of employment. A candidate may be eligible for a flexibly staffed position at either the I or II level depending on training/experience. This vacancy may be filled at multiple levels; apply to each vacancy separately to be considered for all levels.
