Description
The Parks & Recreation Director is within the partially exempt service and serves at the pleasure of the City Manager. Applications and resumes received are subject to public disclosure.
The City and Borough of Juneau is hiring a Parks & Recreation (P&R) Director to lead one of the City and Borough of Juneau's (CBJ) largest departments, with responsibilities over areawide recreation, youth services, aquatics, the ice rink, field house, public facilities and parks maintenance, downtown parking management, and the development of new parks, recreational opportunities, and long-term community planning.

Serving at the pleasure of the City Manager, the Parks & Recreation Director provides strategic and operational leadership for Parks & Rec activities borough-wide, ensures the department plans diverse recreation programs, manages public facilities, and collaborates with various boards, committees, nonprofits, and agencies to provide excellent community services.

The Parks and Recreation Director leads a large and complex CBJ department that is comprised of leadership and staff oriented around providing services that improve the quality of life for our fellow community members. The successful applicant will demonstrate a foundational understanding of and commitment to exceptional customer experiences, staff development, efficient and effective public services, and the future success of specific P&R and general CBJ services. Strong knowledge of current trends, the ability to navigate challenging issues without clear solutions, and the ability to collaborate with diverse policymakers and interest groups is expected.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works (Monday through Friday) 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and will need to be available some evenings to attend public meetings. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau at 1208 Glacier Avenue.
Typical Responsibilities

  • Provides department and community leadership, ensuring adequate staffing and training, and developing internal and external policies.
  • Plans and directs a variety of recreation programs to meet community needs.
  • Manages public facilities; builds and maintains relationships with facility managers.
  • Coordinates and supports the work of various boards, committees, and partner agencies.
  • Oversee the development of the department's budget, monitoring expenditures, and seeking external funding.
  • Supports Assembly process and staffs the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee.
  • Represents the City and Department at public meetings.
  • Collaborates with interagency/interdepartmental organizations on joint projects.
  • Serves in a leadership role in the City's incident command during periods of local emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Desirable Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in parks management, recreation administration or a closely related field;
AND

Five years (5) years of experience in the administration of parks and/or recreation programs. At least three years of this experience should be at a managerial level and include responsibility for supervising a multi-tier professional level staff.
