JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: MAINTENANCE CARPENTER I & II
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE
JOB PURPOSE: To effectively perform skilled manual work and to maintain school district buildings and grounds
equipment and their relating systems in a condition of operating excellence.
Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
1. Perform assignments and independent maintenance operations requiring specialized skills and required
experience with the main emphasis on carpentry.
2. Assist in or perform grounds maintenance, roofing repair and exterior building repair requiring general
maintenance or construction skills.
3. Assist in or perform interior building repairs, alterations or remodeling as directed.
4. Perform furniture, cabinet, fixture, carpet, wood floor, vinyl floor, wood and drywall, window, door
maintenance, repairs and replacement.
5. Assist in or performs building maintenance tasks as directed.
6. Operate light to moderately heavy vehicles and equipment.
7. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with co-workers and clients.
8. Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods. If necessary, work under undesirable weather conditions.
9. Be available to engage in all maintenance jobs as may be necessary.
10. Be available for emergency call outs and winter weather related overtime.
11. Make estimates of material and repair parts requirements.
12. Keep records of time and material required to complete assignments.
13. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities which may be assigned by the Director of Maintenance
or his designee.
Requirements:
1. High school diploma with four years experience in the carpentry trade.
2. Two years apprenticeship or three plus years as a carpenter.
3. Must possess a strong mechanical or building trades background.
4. Must possess the ability to competently and professionally construct, repair and improve buildings and
structures.
5. Ability to follow oral and written directions, ask questions, elicit required information.
6. Ability to perform all work in a neat and professional manner with the initiative and potential to continue to
upgrade personal maintenance skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to think clearly and quickly in emergency and stressful situations.
8. Demonstrated ability to maintain and exhibit a positive attitude in relation to Ketchikan Gateway Borough
School District and co-workers.
9. State of Alaska driver's license with no restrictions.
10. Must possess or able to attain a valid First Aid Card.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak
effectively before parents, staff and students.
Mathematical Skill: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar
graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written,
oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Problem Solving: Can identify and resolves problems in a timely manner. Works well in group problem solving
situations. Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
Interpersonal Skills: Focuses on solving conflict and not blaming. Maintains confidentiality. Listens to others
without interrupting. Keeps emotions under control and remains open to other ideas and tries new things.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk,
hear, walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 80
lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material,
and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several
people and interact with the public and other staff. Requires outside duty and exposure to outside weather
conditions.
