Overview

Summary:

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of a passenger vessel, overseeing the activities and job performance of the vessel crew.

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations, seamanship, and maritime safety procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics of marine machinery, equipment, systems, their functional relationships, installation and repair procedures, methods, and trade practices, along with understanding the environmental conditions under which work is performed aboard marine craft.
  • Excellent navigational and ship handling skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Skill in ship handling, navigation techniques, and operation of marine navigational software, radar, depth sounder, and chartplotter equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
  • Effective supervision skills, fostering teamwork and maintaining crew morale.
  • Ability to maintain or oversee maintenance of the vessel, engines, and auxiliary equipment in an organized manner.
  • Proficiency in preparing logs, reports, and records; effective oral and written communication; computer skills.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays, and overnight when necessary.
  • Ability to work directly with the public, providing information and assistance daily.
  • Good time and attendance management.
  • Ability to handle stress effectively.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Problem identification and resolution skills.
  • Physical ability to perform strenuous work, including lifting/moving up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master's License.
  • Current Medical Card.
  • TWIC card.
  • FCC Radio Operators Certificate.
  • At least five (5) years of Captain or First Mate experience on vessels rated 50 tons or more, with operational experience both day and night in Southeast Alaska waters.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass drug testing and background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mechanical skills and understanding of marine maintenance practices.
  • Experience with all aspects of passenger transportation.
  • Radar Observer endorsement.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operate and control a passenger vessel in accordance with company policies, safety regulations, and navigation standards; responsible for navigation, ship handling, and maneuvering.
  • Conduct safety drills and crew training per U.S. Coast Guard regulations; ensure crew proficiency.
  • Ensure vessel compliance with federal and state regulations; maintain current certificates.
  • Maintain equipment per scheduled maintenance; assist mechanics with troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Uphold high standards of passenger service and crew motivation.
  • Keep operational and maintenance logs.
  • Maintain vessel appearance and cleanliness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
